Hailed by the Santa Barbara News Press as a "dazzlingly brilliant" and "breathtaking" flutist with "tremendous skill," Megan Lanz (DMA) enjoys a fulfilling and multi-faceted career as a pedagogue, international solo performer, orchestral
musician, and pit orchestra musician.
Megan has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with great artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Katharine McPhee, David Foster, Natalie Merchant, Time For Three, Charles Yang, Jackie Evancho, Celtic Woman, Hillary Hahn, Edgar Meyer, Linda Eder, Bebe Neuwirth, and Dr. Peter Schickele (P.D.Q. Megan is a Certified Meditation Instructor, with a specialization in Vipassana (insight & mindfulness). She uses her knowledge in mindfulness to help coach musicians to understand present moment truths, and to identify and accept fears and anxieties with regard to performing. She is passionate about helping performers realize they are in control of their performances and their fears. Through Skype and other online platforms, she coaches performers internationally in meditation and mindfulness. She helps individuals gain insight into their stress and anxiety triggers and guides them toward solutions to refocus and retrain busy and overwhelmed brains. Her mindfulness and meditation workshops are currently part of the Whole Musician curriculum, and she is a member of the American Holistic Health Association.
Megan is passionate about making quality education accessible to any student who wishes to learn. She is a founding member of Whole Musician, a non-profit collective of four uniquely experienced flutists who collaborate to offer unique workshops and retreats for all musicians that address the demands placed on the 21st century performer. The Whole Musician team is dedicated to creating scholarship opportunities so that all students, regardless financial situation, will find this holistic approach to pedagogy and artistry to be within reach. For five years, Megan was a member of the Cultural Outreach Committee for the National Flute Association, which provides scholarships for students who would otherwise be unable to attend the NFA annual convention.
In addition to instructing at Colorado State University, she maintains an active flute studio. In addition to Cherry Creek District Honor Band, Colorado All-State Ensemble, and the University of Colorado High School Honor Band, her students have continued on to perform with professional ensembles, including the Pershing's Own, American Youth Symphony and Music Academy of the West. Her former students attend the Interlochen Arts Academy, The Colburn School, and various colleges and universities.
As a champion of modern solo and chamber repertoire, Megan enjoys commissioning and premiering new works. Her most recent commission was Seven Shards for Three Flutes (2014) by James Grant, which was premiered at the Whole Musician 2014 Retreat in Big Bear Lake, CA. Other commissions include Cascade (2013) by Cody Westheimer, which was premiered at the Canadian Flute Association’s 2013 convention, Stephen Bachicha's Red Stilettos (2009, rev. 2013), and James Romig's Leaves from Modern Trees (2011). She was asked to share Red Stilettos with the attendees of both the National Flute Association Convention and the Canadian Flute Association Convention. Megan's doctoral research was centered around modern composer Salvatore Sciarrino. Her research document, a style analysis and performance companion to his collection L'opera per flauto, is available here.
In addition to being a member of the National Flute Association, the American Federation of Musicians (Local 20-623, Denver), and the Theatre Musician's Association, Megan is associated with the Colorado Flute Association, Golden Key Honor Society and the Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Societies. She has recorded on the GIA and Klavier record labels, and plays a 14k gold Haynes flute, Hammig piccolo, and Trevor James alto and bass flutes.
